South America Day 23: Lima

January 2012

Off on the Mirabus tour of the city. Most of the time was spent on the bus, but we had 40 min in the Cathedral and 20 min in the main square.

Once back in town at Kennedy Park we walked down to the sea and Larcomar. We had lunch at the Peruvian McDonalds - Bembos before heading back into Miaflora's.

After a rest at the hotel we headed back into a busy Kennedy Park to have dinner at La Lucha. We lined up 30 min for a roast beef sandwich and beef with onion and cheese sandwich. We also had some frozen juice and then walked in the park, watching the cats play in the park (they are protected in Kennedy park).

South America Day 22: Paracas to Lima

January 2012

Up early for a trip out to the Ballestas islands. Know as the poor man's Galapagos we were unsure if we should make the trip (as Galapagos was our next main stop), but we're glad we did, they were no disappointment.

On the boat out you see another image in the sand, similar to the Nazca lines.

The Ballestas Islands were just full of thousands of birds, sea lions, penguins and other wildlife.

We then spent an hour on the Boulevard back at Paracas before catching the bus to Lima.

Once in Lima we had dinner at a place next to some pre-Inca clay ruins, at Huaca Pucullana, we shared the ceviche (noticing the trend), I had the chowder for main and DH had beef strips. We then walked our way back into town.

South America Day 21: Nazca to Paracas

January 2012

Up late to leave at 9:30 am. We stopped at the Nazca viewing lines to get a different perspective of the lines.

We drove for about 3.5 hours to get to Ica, a oasis in the middle of the desert.

After a lunch of sandwiches, DH took a buggy up into the dunes for sand boarding.

We drove for another 30 minutes before stopping to taste different varieties of Piscos.

Due to Pisco being hit by a large earthquake a few years back accommodation is best sought at nearby Paracas.

We had dinner near the sea that night, Inca cola, sole ceviche and avocado salad while DH had the grilled sea bass.

We visited the Paracas hotel to try Pisco sours in there lounge, realising that anything we had tried previously had been heavily diluted!

South America Day 20: Arequipa to Nazca

January 2012

We slept ok on the night bus from Arequipa arriving around 7:30 am and automatically noticing the change in weather and landscape.

We checked into our hotel, which had run out of hot water, before stopping to look at the pre-Inca cemetery and mummies.

We went to the airport to check in for our scenic flight over the Nazca lines, the main reason for this being a stop in our trip. It was hard to really get a feel for the scale of the lines at such a height, but gave you great viewing of the many different designs.

We had a late lunch, which was a buffet of food that they cook in the ground. The tamales and chicken were my favourite (DH was not so keen on the tamales).

We got back to the hotel at around 6 pm, exhausted from our bus trip and long day.

South America Day 19: Arequipa

January 2012

Up late for breakfast before walking into town and checking out the Juanita mummy at the University. Unfortunately the cooling machine was broken so we could only see the video and artifacts which was still very interesting.

We had a quick look in the Jesuit Church and the handicraft market.

We took a quick cab ride for lunch at La Nueva Palomino where I had the cheese and potato soup and DH had the pork with potato bake. Guinea pig was a popular dish at this restaurant.

We caught the cab back to town and watch a local parade with dancing and costumes weave it's way through the main square.

We went back to double check the Jesuit church, due to missing the picture of the Last Supper with Guinea Pig, followed by a short walk across the road to view the Catholic church.

After heading back to the hotel to finish packing we had dinner at Mamut, which is Peruvian sandwiches and smoothies.

At 9 pm we boarded our overnight bus to Nazca, seeking some sunshine and warmer weather.

South America Day 17: Arequipa to Colca Canyon

January 2012

Up "late" today at 7:30 am to catch the bus to the Colca Canyon. DH was the only one who managed to catch a glimpse of the volcano peaks that surround Arequipa.

We drove for about 2 hours, stopping to take pictures of the Vicunas.

We then drove for another 1.5 hours, passing over the highest point at 4,915 m (not stopping due to the bad weather). We checked into our hotel before enjoying a buffet lunch, which included BBQ Alpaca.

After lunch we went on a bit of a walk to explore the area.

We decided to visit the hot springs, which were surprisingly good in the rain.

That night we had dinner at a local Andean restaurant, trout for me and chicken with the yellow pepper sauce for DH.

South America Day 16: Cusco to Arequipa

January 2012

Spent some time actually in Cusco this morning (besides eating and sleeping!). We visited the Inca Museum. The bottom section is dedicated to pre-Inca civilisation and the upstairs section to the Inca's and their ruins, along with some on the Inca's post Spanish invasion.

We then headed back to the hotel, to catch the bus to the airport, where the plane was delayed.....again.

We checked into our hotel in Arequipa (also known as the White City) about 5 pm and went for a brief city walk in the rain. We went to a very nice dinner, in a old white building (the city has it's name due to the white volcanic stone that was used in it's buildings and also the high number of Spanish inhabitants). We shared a trio of raw fish, I had the salad with prawns and shellfish, while DH had the crispy baked oven pork. This was also the night I got addicted to the local drink - Chi Cha.

South America Day 15: Inca Trail Day 4: Machu Picchu to Cusco

January 2012

Up at 3:45 am (when most were probably just heading home after bringing in the new year) and on the trail by 4:45 am. Waited at the checkpoint for 30 minutes before making our way to the sun gate (about an hour at a brisk pace), all up doing 6 km today.

The view was clouded over so after about 20 minutes we headed down towards Machu Picchu.

We went down and out the main gate to get our passports stamped, then did a 1.5 hour tour of the very impressive complex. We spent about another hour exploring ourselves (the weather never did really clear up, but the view got slightly better) before catching the train back down to the main town.

After a pizza lunch we caught a very nice train, with glass roof to Ollantayambo, driving past more ruins and km82.

We then caught the bus back to Cusco, having dinner at Jacks cafe before heading back to the hotel.
