NYC - What we missed, what we'd skip, what we loved

December 2013/January 2014

I think we did a pretty good job, considering we had nine days (and also visited Philly and DC), and had travelled for 24 hours to get there. But of course as with most trips there's a list of things we wished we had time for, a list of things we probably would have skipped and a list of things we loved (and some we hope to do again).

What we missed
Shopping - I thought I could sneak a bit of time in here and there but it didn't work out that way
Doughnut Planet - at least we got to try one at Lexington Candy Shop
SMac - Fabulous mac and cheese apparently
African Burial Ground
A trip to Boston

What we'd skip
Momofuku - too many other places to eat in NYC

Empire State - it just takes too long and takes too much valuable time

What we loved
The Two Bridges - although this day din't go exactly as planned it was a fabulous day

The Meatball Shop - our back-up choice was the best

NYLO, NYC - best hotel, in the best location

Second Avenue Deli - the pastrami without the long lines

That's it for our winter break in NYC, Philly and DC. After a few more Australian short break posts, we're back to our Africa trip of 2013....

Buildings of NYC, USA

December 2013/January 2014

Apparently the story goes that they tore down the original Penn St Station and replaced it with the "modern" building that is there now, so the laws changed that meant older buildings were to be preserved.

I'm not sure how accurate (or over simplified by me!) this story is, but if it's true it worked, the city is full of various buildings of various periods.

Momofuku Milkbar, NYC

December 2013

We wanted a quick meal and had heard good things about the Pork Buns at Momofuku Milk Bar.

One of the specials is a porkbun, with drink and a side for $10

H chose the Mexican coke (and then commented that it tasted the same in Oz) and a cookie, I chose the sparking water and the kimchi slaw

I'm still split on this one. Am I glad we went? Yes. Were they fabulous, can't get better pork buns? No.

Lexington Candy Shop, NYC, USA

December 2013

Lexington Candy Shop was a last minute recommendation by a work colleague who had just spent a month in NYC.

Known for their shacks and their burgers we really only had room for one. Online reviews state the service is bad, but this could have been further from the truth, or maybe we just got a good server? The food was good, the shakes were the best we had in NYC and it was overall a good experience.
